Motorcycle gear is an investment in your safety and confidence but it doesn’t all have to be purchased brand new. Knowing what to buy new versus used can help you protect yourself while staying within budget, especially as a new rider.
Gear You Should Always Buy New
Helmet
Helmets are single-impact safety devices. Even if a used helmet looks perfect, you can’t verify its crash history or internal damage. Always buy a properly fitted and new helmet.
Protective Armor & Padding
Jackets or pants with built-in armor should be inspected carefully. If armor shows signs of compression or wear, it’s best purchased new to ensure proper impact protection.
Base Layers (Optional but Recommended New)
Items worn directly against the skin—like riding leggings or armored shirts—are often more comfortable and hygienic when purchased new.
Gear That Can Be Bought Used (with care)
Jackets and Pants (without structural damage)
Textile or leather riding jackets and pants can be purchased used if they show no crash damage, excessive wear, or compromised stitching. Look for intact seams, zippers, and armor pockets.
Gloves
Used gloves are acceptable if they’re lightly worn and structurally sound, with no thinning in the palms or finger seams.
Riding Boots
Boots can be bought used if the soles are solid, ankle support is intact, and there’s no separation or cracking.
Smart Buying Tips
-
Inspect gear in person when possible
-
Ask about crash history
-
Prioritize fit over brand
-
Replace used gear at the first sign of damage
The Bottom Line
Buy new where safety is non-negotiable. Save where structure and protection remain intact.
Riding well starts with being properly equipped.
